Deer hunting knives the Puma Stag Skinner more than most fits my idea of what a good hunting and skinning knife should be. It has the right combination of quality steel size and shape. It is rates quite well in Amazon with a four star rating. I read the five reviews and thought it must be a great seller for them. I really do not see a lot of good deer hunting knives that could compete with this knife for stile and price . I do tend to like the stronger built knives for around camp but this is really more practical for hunting. With this knife you just need to be really sure you have it sharp enough and that it will keep an edge long enough to get your deer field dressed and ready to take to the butcher.

I also like the look of the knife. Having the implied quality of being hand made it could last a long time becoming a great knife to hand down to your grand children. Some reviewers said the handle was not to there liking because the rivets stuck out. For me I do not care if it came with out a handle and I just had to make my own no big deal it would be just more personalized to me. I have had a bowie stile knife blade like this when I was younger and liked using it. I kept it sharp but I had taken it fishing one day and lost it off the boat. Back then the bowie was for me one knife for all purposes.

Deer hunting knives do not really need to have a long blade. I could get away with three and a half inch blade. I would still like a five or six inch skinning knife for large game some of the cuts are deeper when cleaning and gutting moose and elk. The Puma Stag skinner blade would work perfect for that. The Puma has the right stile blade to be a great deer skinning knife. I really have not owned a Puma knife for a lot of years and do not really know about their quality as well as I do some other knives.

It states plainly in the reviews this is not a survival knife and not good for throwing or cutting wood and that would do me fine I use a power saw and an axe. I guess I am not into make work projects and never have seen a hunter out cutting tent poles with a hunting knife. Or using one for cutting fire wood for that matter. This knife comes with440C steel blade 4.7 inch length blade and 9 inches over all length.

The Puma skinner comes with a good leather sheath and a limited life time warranty. Not sure on that meaning, it could mean if you only live a limited life the warranty is good. Be sure to not live to long because that could void your skinning knife warranty. I guess you understand I do not set much value on warranty and stuff like that. This is because most times the warranty has been rejected when I try to collect. The companies always say no the knife is not made to be run over by a semi. Or no it is not covered if you use it to pry up a man hole cover.It seems like the “they” people never really use the knives they buy for anything. I really have no idea how they get by in life.

Because the puma knives are hand made, no two knives are exactly alike. The slightly protruding rivets don't bother me (that's probably a matter of personal preference anyway), and to me they are less obstructive than described in other reviews. With a hand made knife like this, a few rough edges on the handle are probably common.If you are looking for your standard assembly-line produced, polished and fake stag handle, run of the mill knife, this isn't it. If you want a survival knife to cut down trees, this isn't it either (just go buy a survival saw).
